How do you deal with litter box odor?

My cat stinks up the litter box so badly it wakes me up at night. I open the windows and try to take care of it as soon as possible, but is there any easy way to cut down on litter box odor?
Answers:
Get the cat litter that eats and destroys the cat odor. Every time your cats uses the box clean it out. When you go to change the litter wash the cat box out with hot water and bleach or soap. If that does not work then try getting a different kind of cat food. Maybe its the food that is making the poop smell horrible. You just have to make sure that the box is always clean and fresh. You may also want to sprinkle some baking soda in the box when you clean it out. That will help get away any foul smell that is still lingering in the box.

Good luck and have a good day
Have you tried Swheat Scoop cat litter?

I love this stuff. With three cats in the house I can't smell anything, plus it is all natural.
what I do is once a week, I first empty the litter in the trash, then I take the litter box outside and wash it down and dry it and then I add new litter and clean it every other day. the litter boxes that are automatic are no good, they make alot of noise and cats will go in and out of the box to watch it and if you are trying to sleep it is hard with the noise. I also use arm and hammer litter. the best
I use Fresh Step, and I have 2 cats, and NO odor problems. Fresh Step is the best! Also, replace ALL the litter (and wash out the box) at least once a week. Scoop every day.
I got rid of the cat.
try changing his food to a dry one and use a good quality litter, if you haven't already got a litter try that has a lid, try one
You can get scented cat litter from pet shops, but this only improves the stink of cat pooh if the cat buries it properly. If it is the wee that is smelling and the cat is a male that hasn't been neutered, get it neutered- that will improve the smell. You could try changing the diet if the smell is anal related.
Isn't that the worst? I don't think you are really smelling the litter box, but rather the fresh deposit your cat has just made. Since it's the middle of the night and cleaning the cat box isn't on the top of your to-do list, cover the cat poop with cat litter and use a spray of Fabreeze or some other odor eliminating stuff. Then make sure you clean out the box in the morning.
i use arm %26 hammer multi-cat litter. i have 2 cats but i used it even before i got my second cat. i personally think it handles odor better than any of the other litters ive tried. i actually took the door off of a closet i wasnt using and put the litter box in there with a curtain over the door frame. i also put one of those cone air fresheners in the closet. i NEVER smell my litter box.even during the hot days in the summer. i also usually make sure the box is about 3/4 full of litter so they have enough to work with and i clean it out once a day. its also a good idea to put a lid on the litter box and change the filter every 6 months or so. the lid helps with the litter tracking too. with a lid your cat can only throw litter from one side of the box instead of all 4.
CLEAN IT OUT EVERYDAY,YOU NEED TO EMPTY IT OUT AND RINSE IT OUT AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK(MORE OFTEN IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CAT). ALSO CAT LITTER DEODORIZER WITH BAKING SODA WORKS WELL FOR COVERING UP ODOR, JUST SPRINKLE A LITTLE BIT ON TOP OF CLEAN LITTER. I HAVE FIVE CATS AND I HAVE TO CLEAN OUT THE CAT BOXES TWICE A DAY, AND RINSE IT OUT TWICE A WEEK.
I purchased one of those automatic litter boxes. It has sensors and automatically rakes the liter box every time you cat uses it. It uses scoop-able litter and automatically puts the clump in a covered container reducing odor. It's great although they can be a little expensive. There are several brands to choose from.
what are you feeding your cat? if it has a lot of fillers in it the litter box is going to be smelly. switch to natural choice complete care indoor formula. http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncccia.asp.

also what litter are you using? use arm and hammer super scoop fragrence free (cats dont like the fragrence and may not want to use the litter box)

you can get an enclosed litter box, the only reason we did was one of our cats would jump in the liiter box and dig and dig just so the litter would get all over the floor.

make sure you clean out the litter box at least once a day. but from the sounds of your question you already do that.
1. Make sure you keep the tray clean (wash it at least twice a week as a minimum).
2. Use fuller's earth based litter - the clumping kind. It is really good at concealing odours.
3. Put a good depth of litter material into the tray so that the waste material gets covered up.
4. Place the litter tray in a ventilated place (if possible).
5. Empty the tray as often as you can and certainly don't let waste material remain in the tray.
6. As some one has already suggested, try to get your cat to eat solid food - but make sure you always have plenty of water for it to drink.
7. A covered litter tray (like a small 'kennel' with an odour filter in its roof) might help, too.
Ways to cut down on litter box odor ..

1. Purchase really good clumping cat litter.
2. Add Arm and Hammer baking powder to the litter.
3. Ensure that you have a COVERED cat box with a filter.
4. Place your cat box as far away from your nose as possible.
5. Regularly scoop your cat box, removing clumps and poop.
6. Put an air filter and/or deodorizer in the room with the box.
7. Feed your cat expensive, really good cat food with fewer fillers.
8. Buy a dog and have him eat the "tootsie rolls" in the cat box. (Note: You will then have a dog breath problem, but oh well.)

purrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
I live in a small place and that has happened wi/my kitty, too. I tried a new product by Arm %26 Hammer for the first time and it has really helped! I highly recommend it . it is called Arm %26 Hammer High Performance Clumping Litter. I got it at Walmart, but it is still more expensive than other litters, but believe me, it works. I hope it works for your and your kitty!
baking soda, a hooded litter box and change the cat food. my cat is the same way. also get the litter with the crystals that also helps alot.
Is the litter box in your room? Perhaps move it to a bathroom or other room away from where you sleep. GROSS

I use clumpable litter, it allows you to remove the urine and feces so the litter stays nice and clean.
Often the litter box smell is caused by what food your cateats Science Diet really makes smelly poops! Try a diet change to a good quality cat food and see it tha helps. it should.
There are a couple of good litter box deodorizer powders out there that you sprinkle on the litter and/or mix in. One by Tidy Cats and one by Arm and Hammer. I also like to keep an air freshener with fan plug-in in the vicinity, and some Febreze Air freshener spray. The combination of things seems to really help.
clean it as soon as it happens if you give it canned cat food that is a major problem for the stink they also have stuff you can get or even sprinkle baking soda in the litter but they sell stuff at the store you can put in it
