How do you remove cat urine smell from carpeting?

I have just moved into a new apartment and in one closet it smells really terrible like cat urine and also in the hallway any home remedies or anything you may have heard of before would help Iam willing to try anything at this point Iam also pregnant so the smell makes me gag.
thanks in advance.
Answers:
go to petco or petsmart and get either natures miracle or simple solution that works wonders or iv heard you can use vinegar
Just Wash That With Petrol
Baking soda, vacuum it after spreading it on the carpet. If there is a specific spot where it is at then you can treat the area with shampoo and water. Scrub it and then let it dry.
Tell the landlord you need the carpets cleaned or you want your deposit back so that you can have professionals come in to clean them.
Sorry, the only cure I know is replace the carpet and pad and clean the floor with bleach water before adding new carpet.
That sucks!! Sometimes, the only way is to rip out that carpet. it can get all the way to the floor boards. I did see a product called urinebegone, never tried it, but its a lot cheaper than new carpeting. You can find it on the internet. (or an informercial)
You can't! The carpet must be replaced. I'd tell your landlord to fix it. The ammonia your breathig is bad foor you baby.
bicarbonate soda mixed with a small amount water should help as the bicarb soaks up smells. Urine isnt the easiest smells to get rid off. if all else fails rent a carpetcleaner (like rugdoctor) that promises to get rid of it.
I've had cats all my life and haven't found anything yet. Febreze helps for a little while, but eventually the only thing that will definitely help is taking up the flooring, sealing the sub floor with sealer or varnish, and laying down something new. Tell the landlord about the smell and what you said here. If it's a decent landlord (is that an oxymoron?) they will fix the problem. Did you note it on your check in sheet?
There is a product called OdoBan. It is not to mask odors it neutralizes them. It has a pleasant sent, a little strong at first, like for the first half hour.It is by Clean Control Operations. You can go to OdoBan.com to see if you can get it wherever you are. Good luck!
Their's a new product available at JC Penney's, PCH and maybe in one of the stores that sell TV advertised products. It's called Urine gone, I've tried it and it works great. Ordor doesn't seen to come back even when the house gets that damp feeling.
Natures Miracle is the first thing to try. Just pull back the carpet so you can get the pad and the back of the carpeting. Then do the surface of the carpet. This is a non toxic product and works well.

If that fails there are some heavy duty chemical deodorizers available. The best is called UN SMOKE, you will need the Cherry scented as it is formulated for pet odor. Caution this stuff is strong and can make you sick from the fumes.
I once had a male feral cat enter my home and before we could get him out, he "marked" his territory all over the house. I used a product from the pet supply store called "Odor Mute". It is used primarily for removing skunk smell.we all know how badly THAT smells! It worked within 24 hrs. No more problem.and no humans or carpets were harmed in the process!
There are things that you can do but unfortunately nothing will make it completely gone. Cat urine has ammonia in it, it is virtually impossible to get the smell gone permanently, but you can get close.
First, most pet sprays and perfumes just cover the smell temporarily. The only spray I recommend is called Folex. It is in a white spray bottle with maroon writing. It doesn't look fancy, but this is the best you can you use on your carpet to eliminate the problem.
Second, if you're going to try and clean your carpet, do NOT do it yourself. 90% of the store bought stuff has 'sugars' that will make your carpet clean for about 3 days then make it worse. Get a company to do it that has the full van units not the portable cleaners.
Third, if you decide to forgo the old carpet and get new carpet (which is the best option) you will still need to wash whatever is underneath the carpet. cement, wood. those cleaners can also be found at most pet stores.
Tough problem, but good luck!
If you just moved into the apartment and it was there when you moved in, contact the landlord or apartment manager to have it removed. Otherwise, you can get some pet stain and odor remover from Wal-Mart or a pet store.
get yourself a steam cleaner!! if the regular carpet shampoo doesnt work.add some pinesol to the water. also U an buy the carpet fresh meant for pet odors..but that takes a few weeks to get the smell out.
I have cats and whenever they pee in a corner on the carpet I used Woolite Pet Stain %26 Odor remover. Spray this on and saturate the area. Wait about 5-10 minutes and pat it dry (pound with your fists, it helps a lot) with an old towel or rag. After it's completely dry (about 24 hours) pour some Arm %26 Hammer Carpet Deodorizer for Pets and wait about a half hour. If you have a scrubbing brush use this to scrub the powder deeper into the carpet and then vacuum your carpet. So far this is the only thing that has worked.

I have heard about using Original Listerine mixed half and half with water, but I haven't tried it yet to see how it works. But the two products above, the Woolite can be found in the Febreeze section with all the other scented sprays and the carpet deodorizer can be found in the pet section near the litter. Both together should cost you about $5, and the overall process of removing the smell should be about 1-2 days. Don't waste your money getting new carpets.

Since you're pregnant, the Woolite spray is a bit on the strong side when it comes to it's scent so wear a mask when you're spraying it. The deodorizer isn't too bad though. If you do steam clean it, it's going to make the smell come out even more because the heat, water and the steam will make anything that's been saturated with any liquid smell even worse. If you want to, steam clean it after you've used the spray cleaner and deodorizer.
One good idea is to spray it with an antibacterial air freshener like 'febreeze'.
If it's an apartment, tell your landlord you want new carpet. Your rent is supposed to cover stuff like that. If they wont change the carpet, move out. Makes me sick that the landlord didn't have new carpet put in before they rented the unit to new people.
Remove old carpet. Clean the floor. Install new carpet.
I always use baking powder, water and red vinegar.
Mix it together.
Dont use too much of it.
Rub it out and the smell is absorbed by the vinegar.
Baking powder will make the smell stay out
cat urine is ammonia based. You will have to most likely go to the manager of the complex and ask him to remove it. If possible do the unthinkable and "LIE" tell him you have been experiencing allergic reactions due to the smell. It is almost imposible to get rid of that smell! One other option.. Go to the store and get a product called "URINE BE GONE" it comes in a white spray bottle. good Luck!
natures miracle is the BEST that i have found. if u do not want to do the entire carpet get a black light (even an inexpensive black light bulb will do). turn off any other lights and scan over carpet with black light-this will show any urine spots. pour enough of the product to soak through to the carpet pad. natures miracle uses enzymes to actually remove the odor, not just mask it like fabreze, etc. when area has dried go back over with black light to see if mark is gone.
go to any store and get a carpet cleaner if that does not work try spray it with something
Try usuing some pine sol in a bucket with some bleach mixture BUT NOT DIRECTLY ON THE CARPET IT WILL CHANGE THE COLOR OF IT. THE COMBO OF BLEACH AND PINESOL WILL CLEAN DISINFECT AND DEODORIZE IT ALL IN ONE. THAT'S WHAT I USE . HOPE THIS HELPS.
ALL I CAN SAY IS GOOD LUCK! If it just happen there could of been some hope but when it's been in there that long the only real solution is rip up the carpet+ pad and get new.
BYE WASHING THE CARPET WITH SOAP AND WATER
Absolutely no way to get rid of it once it has permeated the carpet

Some suggestions to mitigate

Rip up the carpet

clean with heavy duty cleanser and disinfectant

recarpet

hope it goes away
Take out that carpet and replace it with a new carpet.
Carpet shampoo or remove the carpet and replace it with floor tiles. Carpet makes a good hiding place for unseen micro orgnisms that brings deseases, such as skin allergy, resperatory and other breathing difficulties, especially to children (ie. ashma). Besides, floor tiles are easy to maintain than the carpet.
scrub it with some carpet cleaner. then sprinkle it with lots of baking soda and let the whole mess dry and absorb. then vacume the bking soda up and hit it with some febreeze. it works for vomit to. and red wine.

  1. Ugh, there's nothing I detest more than the smell of cat wee!

While using white vinegar in a spray bottle is a great tip, I used to have such an issue with my cats back in the times of living alone with them. You wouldn't accept the commotion they caused! Truly!

One of my 2 cats (both neutered guys) had taken to painting the majority of my dividers, furniture, and whatever else he could reach. I was alarmed when I got an UV light. He never did that in the majority of the 9 years I've had him and didn't when I got him a mate (they cherish one another and did so immediately) however when a weird dark cat fired appearing outside both of my cats went crazy and the more seasoned one (9) began his divider painting, just as the window ornaments out in the kitty room. I couldn't stay aware of it.

My cats are indoor cats so dislike the stray is really going to get in here yet the two of them detest him (and he is weird...my neighbor's cats loathe him as well). I've taken a stab at cleaning with a pet pee compound and afterward spraying some "No More Spraying" however that hasn't worked. He's a tricky little bugger as well; he holds up until he believes I'm not looking and afterward does it. He's discovered that the moment I see him backing his butt looking for trouble he gets shouted at.

It wasn't until I found "NoMoreCatPee" that I had the option to at long last dispose of this tedious conduct.

Presently my home doesn't smell like a litter box any longer :)

    Good health!
