How do you get a cat to stop biting cables?

My cat keeps biting electronic cables. Tonight she chewed through a microphone cord. I don't want her to bite through something that will electrocute her to death, and having to buy new electronics all the time is getting old. Any suggestions?

Hi there again.there are two approaches you could consider:

1) purchase some Bitter Apple (http://shop.heimtier-center.de/popup_ima. . spray from any pet store to apply to wires. The bitter taste usually is enough to stop the undesired behaviours and works for wires up above the ground.

2) consider using plastic wire looms to hide all your electrical wires within the loom. Not only it makes it difficult for your kitten to chew the cords through this loom, but tidies up the clusters of wires as well. Example of an inexpensive loom product: http://www.action-electronics.com/loom.h.

Both which makes it easy so you would not have to be around to supervise her indiscretions where a squirting water doesn't provide you this option while she's unattended.
buy a new chew toy
get a spray bottle and spray the cat with water everytime you catch her chewing a cable.
Just let your cat experience herself being electrocuted then maybe she won't chew on the electical wires ever again. hahahahaha. I'm just kidding ok, chill out.

Ok maybe you can hide your electrical wires using the wire guards. It is cheap %26 it is made from plastic.

Or you can also use a pheromone spray (you can easily buy it at the pet store). Cats don't like the smell of it. So try spraying it on the cables. Good luck.
We used to have that problem too. We tried to scold her when we saw her doing it, but weren't always around to catch it.

One day we heard her yipe pretty good. We went to see what was wrong and she was in the living room just staring at the area behind the TV. We're pretty sure she was chewing on the TV cord and got zapped. Needless to say she hasn't done it since.

As long as it's not major voltage, she'll be fine. One zap should cure her.
Bitter apple spray is the best solution for this. It is available in all the pet stores I have ever visited.
You should be able to buy some yucky-tasting stuff from your vet clinic.
Squirt gun. Best cat training tool ever invented.
you out smart the cat..cover your wires with a solution of hot sauce and water.just wipe on with a cloth.the odor will fade but the taste will remain.this is pet friendly and safe.or thread your wires through straws.as many as you need for full coverage just cut the last one to accomdate the correct length..and of course replace as needed.larger cords and wires can be be put through wrapping paper tubes..mailing tubes.. clear tubing cut to order at your local hardware store.you can wipe these down too if you like to reinforce your cats new behavior plan..eventually you can removed these when your cat has learned to move on to other choices..i suggest catnip toys..or a vet visit to make sure that the cat does not have a mouth irritant that is making her chew..if you are able to check your cats mouth look for swelling.broken teeth..gum discoloring or even the tongue ..if you find any of these buy any sweet gum oil at the drug store and apply..spraying in would be faster and easier.just continue to love your pet..and continue to look for the right solution or combination.and by the way ..is the cat doing this deed everywhere or just one area.if so that could be a clue..mold..argon gas ..even termites.can change our pets behavior.certain scents too.use the eliminate process until you are sucessful..meow.. the cat i said hello.good luck
it will stop on it's own in a little while. at about the same time it will stop doing other things like breathing, i would suggest spraying it with water but i've tried and it just accelerates the procces.
I put pepper on the ones that had to be out and picked up the rest. It was the only thing that helped. She sneezed several times and doesn't do it anymore. It's helped all sorts of things like chewing carpet too.
I agree, the bitter apple is a good thing. Our cat likes to scratch and we got the bitter apple and sprayed it where she went, and now well she doesnt go there anymore (but now goes somewhere else. :()
