How do you get rid of roaches in your home if you have a pet and don't want to harm them with chemicals?

Two words: Diatomaceous earth
It consists of the fossilized remains of diatoms, a type of hard-shelled algae. It looks like a white powder. It is also used as a filter in pools. It's easier to find in the pool section of a store than the insecticide section.
What happens is that the powder dehydrates insects. It breaks down the exoskeleton of insects and dries them out until they die. It not only works on all kinds of insects, it also works on slugs %26 snails. It is VERY good about killing cockroaches! Best of all, it will not harm cats, dogs, and other pets. I had a problem with fire ants coming into my house to eat the dry cat food. I sprinkled a little around their point of entrance %26 around the cat dishes. Within a day, they were gone!

Mix boric acid powder (get it from the drug store) with water. Soak bread in it and place it inside the cabinet where roaches are. Boric acid will dry them up.

The best way (far better than chemicals even) would be to cut a couple Geckos loose in your house, however.. being as you have cats, I don't know how long they would last.

With Geckos, you'll have a insect pest free home in no time, and you get the pleasure of seeing the little nippers poking their funny little faces outa strange places every so often.

There are two things you may try.
The first is Max Force Traps. They seem to work the best. the other is Boric acid in lids placed where the animals can not reach them.
I had a pest man come in and spray my home. He said it was OK the stay in the home after it was done. Ask the pest man is it is safe.
There is also a tube of jell you can get that is a syringe that combines two chemicals. It is placed under edges and in corners. This also works but is a bit more expensive.
If the roaches are bad, i would recommend getting a pest man. I had them very badly and took a year to get rid of with treatments from the pest man.

place bounce fabric softener sheets down where you see the roaches come in. This will not only get rid of them but it will leave a fresh sent in your house.

If you go outside in the summer rub a bounce fabric softener sheet on your skin and clothes then put one in your pocket and it repells the mosquitoes.

Although there are a lot of old wives tales on here, you really need to call an exterminator and get a roach cleanout. There are several different kinds of roaches and they all carry germs. The chemical a pest control person will use will not harm your pets. Think about it, if it did don't you think they would be sued all the time? Plus, it is not the goal of pest control chemical companies to kill your pets. The pest control technician should ask you whether you have any pets and will give you instructions about where they should be in the house while they are doing the cleanout. Believe me, if this goes untreated, it will only get worse!

essential oils of eucalyptus and peppermint and others I can't remember at this time. sprinkle the oils on cotton balls and spread around the house. also moth balls, heck I'll stay away also.

Well, I find that my cats ARE the best way of getting rid of roaches! I live in a semi-tropical country (that sounds nice, but its really not, lol) and there are cockroaches everywhere, but I never find any in my home. Sometimes I find the legs though.

The best thing to do is get roach traps that you can slid under your counter or put anywhere your pets cannot reach them. Sprinking things around your home is quite dangerous because your pets may lick that stuff up! The traps still contain poison, but it is enclosed. If you live in North America, or in a western country in general, you can probably find traps that you can put your own repellent in, but it may not work as well as poison, unfortunatly.
