how do you get a cat to stop peeing on the rug??

(were not going to get rid of her or put her down.. so dont mention those two options. kay thanks!)
Answers:
let her know that you are disappointed (show her the spot and tell her no firmly) then put her directly in the litter box. You could also spray with a very watered-down vinegar or ammonia. Cats don't like it and will not use the area for urinating. You may smell it faintly for a little bit but it will fade quickly and she will still know it is there. The Vinegar is the best way to go because it is non-toxic and they really don't like it. But the rest is just like a puppy. Show her what she did, let her know that you are disappointed, and show her where she is supposed to go, in that order. Be consistent! won't take long.
get rid of the rug. Problem solved.
kill 'em, or cut off his pecker
Put the litter box were shes peeing and when she doesn't use her litter spary her with water and tell her no and when you see her ready to pee put her in her box so she knows what its for
bust a cap in her
There are sprays you can get at places like PetSmart that are supposed to repel animals from peeing on furniture and carpet. You might wanna check into it.
get something she'd rather pee on and give it to her
There is stuff you can buy for dogs that keep them away it is a spray that you cant smell and it doesnt harm anything I would try that.. I think it is called dog away.. it might work for cats? Worth a try?
scare the livin' 8 lives out of it, when you catch'm doin it..
they hate to be left with just one life to live on.
She may be peeing where another cat has peed (even years before). Even if you replace the rug, she might go there again, as it may be a behavioral problem.

Try putting a litterbox right over the spot she's hitting. And consider Feliway (recreates the feline pheromone). You spray this, and it comforts kitty.also works well to spray in her carrier before she goes to the vet or other traumatic things.

Feliway's site: http://www.feliway.com/homefeliway.nsf.
Get rid of the cat, or make it an outdoor cat.(it will come back when it's pregnant or hungry).
You need to look at the reasons she is doing this, since it is not normal. Cats prefer to be clean and use a littler box. The thing that seems most likely is that she has a urinary tract infection which will need to be treated with antibiotics after a visit to your vet. If she is very old, it may be incontinence, although if she is always using the same place, that is unlikely. The suggestion to put the litterbox there is a good one, if it turns out there is no medical reason this is happening.

Male cats who are not castrated before they start spraying are difficult to stop once they have learned the behavior, but that is usually not an issue for females.
Clean the rug with a cleaner that has enzymes like Nature's Miracle or Urine Gone. Then the smell is gone and they don't go back to it thinking it's an ok spot to use. You can also get a repellant to spray the spot with as another reinforcer. The vet also suggests putting the box where they usually go so it kind of forces them to use it. Also you might want to make sure the cat doesn't have an infection that is causing the behavior (sometimes they do this when they have a UTI or other health problem). If you notice the cat scratching at the sides of the box when it IS in it, it could be a sign of protest against the type of litter you have. My vet recommended unscented scoopable litter when I was having this problem with my cat. Turned out I just need to get another box so I had one for each cat and that made them happy, but each case is different. Hope something here helps for ya.
Keep your litter box very clean. Some cats are very picky about a dirty litter box. You might want to consider moving it to a more central location (if feasible) so your cat doesn't have to travel so far to get to it.
Whatever you do with the litter box, you have to get the urine odor completely out of the rug, otherwise, the cat will simply continue to return to reinforce their mark. There are commercial products available at pet stores. If you can't find one, white vinegar will help.
The water spray idea as previously mentioned works, the other way or additional way is to catch her doing it, pick her up and gently rub her her nose in it speaking to her firmly, important you catch her doing it though.
There are also some cat deterrent sprays out there, so spray the rug so she associates it with somewhere not pleasant.
The only time my pets have ever done something like that there was a reason. Either a sick cat or some sort of upsetting change in the household. See what's bothering kitty first.
I agree with the first answer.get rid of the rug. It now has the scent of the cat's urine on it and this is a signal to your cat that it's ok to urniate there. If the urine has soaked through, you may also need to bleach the area. If that doesn't work, put her litter box on the area she's peeing on and slowly move it away from the spot until it's back where you normally keep it.

Don't get too mad at your cat.she's just developed a bad habit that's very common with animals.
Try spraying orange glo on it. (the rug)
take her to the vet make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection, then get some nature's miracle spray from a pet store and clean the rug.
Well is the cat declawed, sometimes if the cat is declawed it hurts to use the litter when she tries to cover it. Or maybe she has urinary infection and so she hates the litterbox b/c when she used it, it hurts so they try many other places. Or do u have multiple cats, if u do u need one litter box per cat. and u need atleast one litterbox per floor. Good luck
