How do you keep the liter from stinking so bad??

My roomate and I change the liter about once a week, but it seems that the liter stinks unsually bad. We have one cat. We both know of households who have cats that you cannot smell at all..and they don't tend to the liter everyday!
Answers:
use arm and hammer cat litter it works great for my 8 cats and litterboxes but we scoop them daily and change them once a week
maybe the liter your buying the wrong liter or it just don't seem to work out good
Empty it often.
Use baking soda to help quench the smell..
There are products on the market that stop the smell, do some research.
Put baking soda in the litterbox. I use about 1 cup in the litter box. Works great.

Good Luck
I have NEVER had that problem.. I change the litter once every two days(any longer than that and you will have a stink problem) and I use the clump litter and that is important in keeping the stink down.. KNOCK ON WOOD.. I have never had any problem
Check out Arm and Hammer flushable litter. Thats what my fiance and I use and its great! We just flush the litter whenever we go into the bathroom. Plus, its fairly affordable! Also, room deodorizer Oust, spraying right above box helps a TON! :)
u have to take it out very often
Start by cleaning it every day..then every other day.

When it starts to smell you'll know how long you can go between cleaning.

Evidently once a week is too long for your cats.
arm and hammer
A layer of baking soda about 1/2 cm. thick works wonders.

I have been using Feline Pine for a couple years, and have never had a problem with odor. If my cat puts down a particularly stinky movement, the stench goes away in a few minutes.
Keep the box cleaner, and change to a clumping litter that you can scoop out daily. It can only smell if it is dirty.
how about cleaning out the cats "bizness" everyday! it could also be the brand of litter! use fresh step scoopable! you should buy the arm and hammer powder stuff to put on the litter.it makes it smell good!
Buy different litter. Regular cat litter will stink like ammonia no matter what. If that doesn't work, you may need to take it to a vet. There could be something wrong with your beloved feline. My girlfriend had three cats and and it stunk almost all the time. When she would change the litter, it would be fine even after her two older cats would use the box. But as soon as her younger cat used it, the whole basement would reak! She took him to the vet and there was something wrong with him. That may not be the case with your kitty though. Try getting the crystal kind of litter.
good cat litter is expensive, but sooo worth it for the smell relief! arm and hammer is the best. also, mixing in baking soda works wonders, but remember to mix it, don't just leave it on top.
also, slap an air freshener on the side of the box. you can find the kind that stick anywhere at a grocery store.
also, check your kitty's diet. things like milk, cheese, excessive people food, and random things it eats (rubber bands, bits of paper) make it smell much worse. make sure your cat doesn't have diarrea, as that could be a sign of bigger problems.
I have four cats and ours never smells, we use a cat litter that has an odor killer it seems to work try using something that gets activated when the cat scratches at it use one that has a freshner such as pine fresh or something
you should change it evryother day then. If it stinks, you just dont cleqan it enough. some cats just have stronger smelling urine or feces. Also try baking powder to help alieve the smell. But when nothing else sems to help,, change litter more.
scoop it every day, and change it once a week, and if that doesnt work any better, try using indoor formula cat food, and also try adding baking soda to the top of the litter after scooping it. good luck ;)
We have four cats ,three of which live inside all the time. I have always used baking soda in combination with their litter. Believe me, that does not always make a difference. They have eaten Cat Chow for their entire lives until recently. I did not change brands, I simply started feeding the indoor formula of Cat Chow.I didn't change due to the odor. I changed because one of cats was having trouble with hairballs. The food change helped considerably with the hairball problem and the added benefit was the litter box does not smell near as stinky between changings.
P.S. All of our cats have been spayed or neutered, which I have been told makes a difference.
Use a really good quality cat litter. I had that problem before and I had to experiment with several different brands.
1) Johnny Cat is no good unless you intend to change litter filler every other day. As soon as the cat poops in it, the smell seems to linger in the clay. It the same with the "Multiple Cat" brand.
2) Fresh Step clay is much much better if you don't like the hard clumping clay which has had some bad raves on safe-ness to kittens and some cats.
3) Hard clumping litter is great in controlling the ammonia smell from cat urine and Fresh Step clumping caly litter is really good, as far as odor-control goes, but I wouldn't use often becuase some of its contents are kinda not safe.
4) Organic naturally clumping litter is very safe to use and controls odors as well as the best hard-clumping clay litters. I use "Pee-pod" made from fibers of a plant. You can get this at Fred Myers or a good pet shop. $7.00 a bag which lasts up to a mnth. I just scoop out the solid clumps of urine and stool everyday and top up the litter box as needed. Only thing is, the cat will leave traces of it on the floor. :( But yur house will smell a lot better!
If you change litter weekly that should be sufficient (assuming quality clumpable litter), make sure to scoop at least everyother day removing clumps. I like and use ScoopAway litter for multiple cats I only have one cat but this seems to have the best deodorizers in it. It runs me about $14 dollars for 20 pounds or so. Put about 2 inches deep in litter box. I also recommend enclosed litter boxes to contain the mild smell right after your pet uses the box. Good luck!
make a schedule,u clean it out on Mondays,ur room mate clean it out on Wendsdays,u on Fridays, her on Sundays.
