My husband and I bought this stuff on the internet called "Scat Cat". It seems to be working for keeping him out of areas of the house we don't want him. He is still persistent when it comes to not listening to us. How do you handle this?

You really have to be persistent and consistent. Every time he does it wrong, you need to make clear that you are not happy. If you yell, only yell when the cat has done something wrong.
Water gun works, so does a plant mister. It can be tough on the furniture, though.
But cats are notorious for not listening. Are you being too controlling? Cats do need some freedom and some space.
If you can't give the cat some freedom indoors, can you give him some exercise outside to work off some of the extra energy? That might help, too.
Also, you don't mention if this is a kitten or a grown cat. Baby animals are into everything, and to a certain extent, you pay for the cuteness with the bad behavior. You can train them, but it's important to give a little allowance for the exuberance of youth. The cat may settle down when older.
Water gun
get a squirt bottle and spray the little bratty katty every time he is naughty. Cat's hate water. Good luck

sorry hun but you don't discipline cats, they discipline you,sometimes they let you think you are boss when it suits them.the only way to keep him out of the areas, you dont want him to go is close the doors.some cats will even teach themselves to open these doors.if your favorite chair is his favorite chair, you best forget it and pick another.you could try the let him think that hes won, but I doubt it will work . cat rule

The only humane way to stop a cat from doing what you don't want him to do is to either:
1. Shake a rattle at him, or
2. squirt him with a water pistol (not one of the high powered ones, of course!)
These two methods are distasteful to the cat but won't hurt him.
They MUST BE DONE EXACTLY AT THE TIME OF THE CAT"S MISBEHAVIOR - for the cat to understand. The cat will need to connect his behavior to the negative stilmuli in order for the negative reinforcement to work.
IYour consistantcy in using either of these will enable him to connect the behavior to the unpleasant sound or water spritz that he experiences.
Be patient, it may take awhile, but eventually, his unwanted behavior will be changed.

i just tell my tabby;s no no in i ruff voice then they know their doin something their not suppose to be doin. and useually the go somewhere else. if people hit their cats then they start running scard. cats are loving beings
Well,, um.. my sister siad in a book it said ussally just to spray a little water at your cat for any cat accually and you could also maybe hit the nose a on your cat lightly like not so hard that's what my sister read then told me.. im not sure but I think thats right..

cats can be trained if you have the patients of a saint,If he is a tom(male) fixing him will mellow him some but the thing is cats are like people they can have mental issues or they just see you as an a subordinate .you can't force anything,maybe he is meant to be an outside hunter.
