How long does pet waste take to decay?

Sigh. I just discovered my cat has been pooping in my backyard. He does bury his waste, so it's not obvious to the naked eye. Should I follow him out there and clean up after him promptly as I would with a dog? How long will the stuff take to decay?
Answers:
If he buries it there's no need to clean it up. It will not harm any plants will in fact help them grow.

How long it takes to decay will vary based on humidity, rain, and soil conditions.

Unless you have a backyard the size of a small porch, it will decay fast enough..
:p it's like styrofoam.. it doesn't ever decay
Whether you clean it up or not is up to you. Do you want cat crap buried in your yard? If you don't care, don't bother cleaning it up. Well, unless you have a dog..because the dog might dig it up and eat it.
If it's buried, it's fine, why would you go to the trouble to dig it up?
Leave him alone,The cat is smarter than you seem to be
Hey, if he keeps it up you won't have to have a litter box!
The concern is ground water. If you live in a community that gets it's water source from a reservoir, or well, not cleaning up after your pet could ultimately contaminate your drinking water.
