How do you treat an anorexic cat?

We've had this white cat for awhile--even more so when she was a kitten and then rescued her 2 months later--from someone who badly neglected animals.

She was terribly skinny and all skin and bones. My wife and have been trying to fatten her up a bit over time, but we seem to be losing the battle with her.

We try to give her canned, we try to give her other cat food that's formulated to help her, but she doesn't want to gain weight.

And on top of that, she's always throwing up as soon as she eats 7 times out of 10.

I don't know how long we can keep her alive. But taking her the vet is expensive.

Any suggestions?

If your cat is throwing up a lot it could be because of hair balls. Try to give her some hairball medicine, also there are some cat foods out there specially formulated for hairballs - also another reason for the throwing up is she may have gotten used to not having much/any food and eats too much and her body naturally purges when she has over eaten and can't handle it. Try feeding her portions at more regular intervals

Well if you want to save this kitty's life you might just have to take her to the vet. It might be serious but she also might just have tapeworm. Either way she will die if yoou dont seek medical help

Maybe you can give her some meat, like beef or chicken. Cats are naturally carnivores, so perhaps she'll take a liking to it. >

I sounds like there is something seriously wrong with her. Taking her to the vet is the best choice. But off of what I know and what symptoms are present it sounds as if she may be hyperthyroid. However I am not diagnosing the pet, so that is why it would be best to take her to the vet so she can get a through exam and a thyroid test. If she is hyperthyroid she will have to be on medication for the rest of her life. Please do the right thing for her and take her to the vet, it will only prolong her life.

Cat milk, specifically formulated with vitamins and nutrients for cats is easy to digest, and is available at department/grocery/pet stores. Also, my cat refused to eat for a period of time last summer. Eventually I found on the internet a suggestion of spreading wet cat food over the cat, in the hopes that the cat would lick itself off. I used a pate cat food, and wiped it on my cat. She immediately started licking it off, and resumed eating her regular food that day.

u could put steroids in the cat temporarily to make the cat gain body weight and then try changing the food u give it

well i would definately call the vet at least.purina one makes a dry food for sensitive systems i would try this and maybe take the gravy from the soft food and make it more appealing to her maybe she will eat it if not why dont you cook her up a chicken breast and give her some each day or maybe some ground meat cats are carnivores so maybe she will eat this

I understand that vet care is expensive, however, your cat needs to see a vet to diagnose and treat whatever is wrong with her. Please take her to a vet.

my cat had a thread wrapped around the back of her tongue. it went into to her intestines and cut through them. she vomited alot one day and the vet saw on the exray waht he thought was just a hairball. by the time surgery was done, it was too late. the skin inside her had died. carolyn b.
