This cat can not become an inside cat. He would kill us all if we tried to keep him inside full-time.

Keep him locked up for the first 3-4 weeks so he knows he's at a new home..then its just chance and hope he's smart enough to stay alive.

Sorry but the best suggestion is to keep it in the house for a while that way they tend not to wonder to far from the residence when they do get outside.
There's no real way to train him to 'be safe'. I hope you're not really attached to him because outdoor cats have a very short life span. If you really love him, you'll deal with him being indoors. If not, I suggest you give him to someone who is willing to keep him inside.
The average outdoor cat lives 6 years. Indoor cats live 16 years. There is no way to train your cat to be safe.
he cannot be trained to stay safe. I actually take my cat out on a leash when he begs to go outside. I have seen dead cats in the middle of the street too often to let my cat out alone. One time I saw a dead kitten, and it still bothers me today.

It sounds awful, but to keep my cat from running out the FRONT door into traffic, but ok to use the BACK door into the big back wooded yard, oh this is awfull.lol.. My mom put a five gallon bucket of water outside the front door and everytime my cat Scout triiiiiiiiiiiiied to go out the front door. She'd grab him and dunk dunk dunk dunk dunk him!! Poor baby, And then she'd walk him to the BACK door and toss him out THERE. It was a huge fenced yard with trees and grass and shrubs and all. like a mini forrest and he could PLAY there and be safe.. . But he SWORE gramma was GONNE KILL HIM!!

It sounds AWFUL, but it works!! It took three times doing it, ( he's blonde, so kinda slow. ) but the third time settled it. He never ran into the street again.
You can't. If you're certain that he can't adjust to being a fully indoor cat, then arrange for him to go out in a safe manner. Cats get over staying inside if you keep him inside long enough he will sttopp trying to go outside i've done this with my cat. it is just not safe outside for them
You can't. He either has to become and inside cat or maybe you can build him a little outside run like they attached to some dog kennels. Don't tell him it's a dog kennel.
